Do Not Drive Recall: Arranging a Tow to the Dealer

Received a do-not-drive recall? Confirm the dealer’s transport instructions before arranging your vehicle’s pickup.

Check the notice before moving the car

A recall notice and a “do not drive” warning are not interchangeable. Follow the instructions for your specific vehicle. If the manufacturer says not to drive it, do not drive it to the dealership just because the engine starts or the trip is short.

Use NHTSA’s recall lookup with your VIN, then contact the manufacturer or dealer. Some recently announced recalls may not yet include every affected VIN. A search showing no open recalls does not establish that a vehicle with a new mechanical problem is safe to drive.

NHTSA’s Takata recall guidance illustrates why instructions must be vehicle-specific: certain affected vehicles have do-not-drive warnings. This guide does not identify whether your car is included.

Ask the dealer about transport before booking

Tell the service department the VIN and recall number. Ask whether they will arrange transport, require an approved provider, or authorize an independently booked tow. Get the payment or reimbursement terms before committing to a pickup.

Do not assume a recall repair means any tow you arrange will be free. Rick’s cannot approve manufacturer coverage or promise reimbursement. If the dealer provides transportation, coordinate that directly with them.

  • Confirm the correct dealership and vehicle receiving entrance.
  • Ask whether an appointment or advance acceptance is required.
  • Confirm receiving hours and after-hours key instructions.
  • Keep the contact name, case number and written transport authorization available.

Give Rick’s the recall instructions and pickup details

If you need to arrange your own tow, call with the year, make, model, drivetrain and the manufacturer’s exact restriction. Mention damaged suspension, leaking fluids, locked wheels, missing keys or whether the car cannot steer. Do not test-drive it to demonstrate the problem.

Rick’s provides compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing with dollies when appropriate. We confirm equipment suitability against the vehicle and manufacturer’s transport requirements. Some recall conditions or transport requirements need another provider; we do not offer flatbed towing.

For a Lake View East pickup, give the street number, nearest intersection and whether the vehicle is at the curb, in an alley or inside a garage. For garages in Lake View East, Lincoln Park or elsewhere on Chicago’s North Side, confirm posted height, ramps, turns and loading room before dispatch.

What to expect when you call

We review the vehicle, recall restriction, pickup access and receiving destination, then confirm whether we can handle the tow. Ask for current availability, the arrival estimate and the price directly. Arrange a separate ride for passengers unless transport has been explicitly confirmed.

Before pickup, keep the dealer’s instructions and keys available and review our tow preparation checklist. Never move or start a vehicle contrary to the recall instructions to make loading easier. If there is smoke, fire or an immediate danger, move away and call 911.

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance takes calls 24/7 for Lake View East and Chicago’s North Side. Call to confirm suitable towing to your chosen dealer.

If the vehicle cannot be driven safely, review Rick’s wheel-lift towing. Give the pickup and destination, vehicle details, keys, drivetrain and roll/steer condition so equipment and access can be checked.
