Swollen or Leaking Car Battery? Stop Before a Jump Start

Battery case swollen, cracked or leaking? Do not connect a booster. Call Rick’s and describe the damage before arranging service.

Visible damage changes the service request

A car that clicks or cranks slowly may have a discharged battery. A battery with a distorted case, a crack or apparent leakage needs a different response. A jump start does not repair physical damage. Stop attempts to boost or charge it and arrange professional assessment.

Battery-charger manufacturer CTEK identifies swelling and leakage as reasons a battery needs replacement. Report what you have already seen from a safe position; do not lean over the battery, touch liquid or remove covers to get a closer look.

Keep away from a potentially hazardous battery

Hyundai’s jump-start safety instructions warn about corrosive battery acid and combustible hydrogen, and require flames, sparks and smoking materials to be kept away. Do not attempt a roadside repair to the case or disconnect cables from a visibly damaged battery yourself.

If there is smoke, fire or immediate danger, move away and call 911. Routine roadside service should not delay emergency assistance. Keep other people away from the affected area and tell the responder exactly what you observed.

This guide concerns a conventional low-voltage vehicle battery. It is not a procedure for handling an EV’s high-voltage traction battery. Do not touch high-voltage components or orange cables.

Cold weather does not make every no-start a frozen battery

As Chicago heads toward winter, mention suspected freezing when requesting service. Hyundai specifically warns against jump-starting a frozen battery. Do not assume a battery is safe to boost simply because the outside temperature has risen, and do not use a heater, flame or hot water to try to restore it.

A chilly morning or a no-start alone does not establish freezing or physical damage. Describe the symptoms and known history rather than trying to diagnose the battery yourself. For an ordinary no-start without a reported hazard, Rick’s can discuss jump-start service and whether it is appropriate.

Can Rick’s replace it where the car is parked?

Mobile battery replacement depends on safe conditions, compatible stock, access and the vehicle’s installation requirements. Report swelling, leakage or suspected freezing before booking. Do not assume that every damaged battery can be handled in a parking space or that a standard replacement appointment covers a spill.

Have the year, make, model and engine details ready. Mention recent boosts, a battery warning while driving, or an engine that stopped while running. A replacement battery does not repair an underlying charging-system fault, and some vehicles need specific battery registration or workshop procedures.

If workshop transport is needed, Rick’s can assess compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing with appropriate dollies. Hazardous conditions must be addressed before loading; towing suitability is not guaranteed. Flatbed towing is not offered.

What to tell us for a Lake View East or North Side call

  • Your exact street address, nearest cross streets and parking position.
  • The vehicle details and the damage or symptoms already observed.
  • Whether someone has already tried a boost or connected a charger.
  • Any smoke, leakage or other hazard, and whether emergency responders have been called.
  • Garage height, ramps, turns, loading room and authorized gate access, if applicable.

For Lake View East service, give the entrance that actually reaches the vehicle. These details also help plan calls in Lincoln Park and elsewhere on Chicago’s North Side.

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance takes calls 24/7. We review the situation, explain whether a suitable service can be provided, and confirm availability, an arrival estimate and the price before dispatch. More practical vehicle questions are covered in our driver guides.
