Battery in the Trunk? Where a Jump Start Connects

Battery in the trunk and your car won’t start? Call Rick’s with your vehicle details and parking location.

The battery’s location may not be the connection point

You may know the battery sits beneath the cargo floor but find that the owner’s manual directs starting assistance to points under the hood. That is not a reason to remove the battery or improvise a connection. The approved positive and negative points depend on the exact vehicle.

For example, Volvo’s XC90 starter-battery guidance places the battery in the cargo compartment but directs an external starting battery or charger to the engine-compartment connection points. It specifically says not to use the cargo-area battery terminals for that purpose. This is a model-specific example; check your own year, model and powertrain.

Tell Rick’s what opens and what is blocked

When arranging jump-start assistance, give the year, make, model and whether the vehicle is gasoline, diesel, hybrid or electric. Explain whether the hood, doors and trunk open normally. If a dead battery has also left you locked out, mention that at the start of the call.

  • Nose-in parking: describe the wall, fence or parked car in front of the hood.
  • Rear access: say if the hatch is against a wall or the cargo area is full.
  • Garage: provide the entrance, posted height, level, ramps, turns and room around the vehicle.
  • Previous attempts: report which equipment was used and any sparks, unusual smell or warning messages.

You do not need to dismantle trim or unload the trunk in the street before calling. First establish which access is actually needed. Do not push a disabled car into traffic to create working room.

Avoid guessing at terminals or system voltage

A visible metal stud or an accessible battery is not enough to identify the correct connection. Have the vehicle’s manual available if possible. Rick’s provides suitable 12V and 24V jump starts; the system and equipment must match the vehicle. Two batteries do not, by themselves, establish the required starting voltage.

Do not attempt a boost if the battery is swollen, leaking, cracked or possibly frozen. Keep clear of damaged electrical components and report the condition. Our damaged-battery guide explains why a jump start may be the wrong service. For fire, injuries or immediate danger, call 911 first.

A successful start does not settle the battery’s condition

Tell us whether you hear clicking, slow cranking or normal-speed cranking without the engine starting. Also report whether the car stopped while driving. These details help assess the request; battery location alone does not diagnose the fault.

If replacement is appropriate, mobile battery installation requires a separate check of battery fit, stock, safe access and any model-specific setup requirements. If the vehicle needs workshop attention, discuss compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing. A jump start does not repair a failed starter or charging system.

Call with your cross streets and parking position

For Lake View East or another covered North Side pickup, give the exact address and nearest intersection. If the car is behind an apartment building, identify the alley entrance rather than only the front door. Say which way the vehicle faces and whether a gate or another vehicle blocks the approach.

Rick’s is open 24/7. Call to confirm suitable assistance, availability, an arrival estimate and the price before dispatch. Clear access information helps us plan the service without asking you to take the car apart first.
