Out of Gas With a Capless Fuel Filler? What to Check

Out of gas with a capless filler? Call Rick’s with your vehicle model, fuel grade and location before trying to add fuel.

A gas-can spout may not fit the filler

If your vehicle has a capless fuel system, adding fuel from a portable container can require a specific funnel. A gas-station nozzle working normally does not mean a portable can’s spout will work the same way.

Ford’s capless-refueling guidance directs drivers to use the fuel filler funnel supplied with the vehicle. It warns against inserting a container nozzle or aftermarket funnel, or prying the filler valve open, because that can damage the filler or seal and spill fuel. Follow the manual for your exact model; this Ford example is not a universal procedure for every vehicle.

Mention the funnel when you request fuel delivery

Call Rick’s for roadside fuel delivery and say that the vehicle has a capless filler. Tell us whether you have the vehicle’s fuel funnel and whether anyone has already tried adding fuel. If you cannot find the funnel, say so before dispatch so the equipment requirements can be discussed.

Check its storage location in your owner’s manual instead of assuming it is beside the spare tire. Do not dismantle the filler or substitute an improvised tool. If the fuel door itself will not open, that is another detail we need; bringing gasoline alone does not resolve a stuck door.

  • Vehicle: year, make, model and engine type.
  • Fuel: the required type and octane from the label or manual.
  • Equipment: capless filler, correct funnel available or missing, and any apparent damage.
  • Previous attempts: fuel added, spills, a stuck spout or the wrong fuel.

Confirm the grade, quantity and total quote

Rick’s offers regular and premium gasoline delivery. Tell us the grade your vehicle requires rather than choosing by the vehicle’s appearance or assuming every model uses regular. Confirm the fuel specification, amount, availability and total delivery price before service.

The quantity needed for a restart and the restart procedure can vary by vehicle. Use your manual rather than a universal ignition-cycling or cranking routine. Read our out-of-fuel guide for the broader steps after an empty-tank breakdown.

Report damage or a failed restart before ordering more fuel

If fuel ran onto the ground or the filler appears damaged, stop trying to add more and explain what happened. Do not assume that another container or more force will solve the problem. For fire, injuries or immediate danger, call 911 first.

A car that still will not start after proper refueling needs reassessment. Tell Rick’s whether it cranks normally, slowly or not at all. If workshop attention is needed, we can discuss compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing, subject to the vehicle and pickup access. A fuel delivery is not a repair for a damaged filler or fuel-system fault.

Give us the entrance that reaches your car

For Lake View East and covered North Side locations, give the street address, nearest cross street and actual parking entrance. At a harbor lot, include the entrance and parking row. Behind an apartment building, identify the alley entrance and any locked gate.

Tell us which side of the car has the filler and whether it is blocked by a wall or another vehicle. For garages, provide the posted height, level, ramps, turns and working room. Rick’s takes calls 24/7; confirm suitable access, availability and the current arrival estimate when arranging service.
