Air Suspension Sitting Low? What to Tell Your Tow Operator

Car sitting unusually low on air suspension? Call Rick’s with your vehicle details and location before moving it.

Describe the height change, not a guessed diagnosis

If one corner has dropped, the rear sits unusually low or a suspension warning appears, tell Rick’s exactly what you see. Include whether it happened while parked, after loading cargo or following an impact. Do not assume the air compressor, battery or a particular suspension part is the cause.

Some vehicles intentionally change height when parked. For example, Volvo’s XC90 leveling-control guidance describes entry/exit lowering and adjustments after parking. That does not establish that a sudden lean or warning on your vehicle is normal. Check the message and instructions for your exact model before deciding whether to drive.

Low clearance changes the pickup assessment

Tell us if the body appears close to a tire, the bumper is near a parking stop or anything is touching the ground. Do not crawl underneath to measure it. A description or photo taken from a safe standing position can help explain the situation.

Rick’s provides light-duty wheel-lift towing with dollies when appropriate. Air suspension, drivetrain and ground clearance must be assessed together. Damaged-suspension towing requires a vehicle-specific equipment and access check; a tow that worked for another SUV does not confirm this one will fit.

Rick’s does not provide flatbed towing. If your manufacturer’s requirements or the vehicle’s condition call for equipment we do not offer, you will need a provider equipped for that transport.

Leave leveling and loading procedures to the operator

Have the vehicle manual available, and say whether the dashboard and suspension controls still work. Do not experiment with height settings or release controls simply to prepare for pickup.

Volvo’s 2021 V90 recovery instructions require disabling pneumatic leveling before lifting an equipped vehicle. They also explain that inadequate ground clearance or a steep loading angle can cause damage. The correct preparation varies by model; the menu sequence for one car is not a universal towing procedure.

If the vehicle has no electrical power or its controls will not respond, report that before dispatch. It may change the loading plan. A jump start should not be assumed to repair a suspension fault.

Share the details that affect the route out

  • Vehicle: year, make, model, drivetrain, factory or modified suspension, and key availability.
  • Symptoms: exact warning message, which corner or axle is low, and any recent impact.
  • Position: nose-in parking, a curb or wheel stop, nearby vehicles and room to reach the wheels.
  • Access: garage height, ramps, turns, gates and loading room—not just the height at the entrance.
  • Destination: repair-shop address, receiving hours and permission to leave the vehicle.

For a Lake View East apartment pickup, identify the alley entrance and the actual parking space. In a garage, describe any sharp ramp transition on the route out. Do not drive the car out solely to make access easier if it is scraping, rubbing or the manual says to stop.

Call before arranging the move

Rick’s takes calls 24/7 for Lake View East and covered areas of Chicago’s North Side. We’ll discuss the vehicle’s condition, equipment suitability, access and the destination. Confirm availability, the arrival estimate and the quote for the described work before dispatch.

Use our tow preparation checklist for keys and shop-delivery arrangements. If the vehicle is creating immediate traffic danger, or there are injuries or fire, call 911 first.
