Can You Use a Spare Tire From Another Car?

A friend’s spare tire is not automatically suitable for your car. Confirm compatibility before arranging a tire change.

A flat before work or on the way home can make borrowing a nearby spare sound convenient. Before someone brings it over, establish whether it is approved for your vehicle. If the car is exposed to traffic, do not attempt a roadside wheel swap. Call 911 for immediate danger.

A compact spare is not a universal replacement

Hyundai’s 2026 owner’s manual instructions for a compact spare specifically warn against using that spare on another vehicle. That is a model-specific instruction, not a compatibility guide for every car. Check your own owner’s manual and have a qualified tire shop or dealer confirm any proposed replacement wheel and tire.

Do not treat similar appearance, the same brand of car or a friend’s assurance that it “fits” as confirmation. A full-size borrowed wheel also needs verified compatibility. If that information is unavailable, tell Rick’s you do not yet have a confirmed usable spare.

What to have ready before requesting installation

For usable-spare tire installation, provide your vehicle’s year, make and model, which tire is flat, and whether the spare came with the car or was obtained separately.

  • Have the spare’s identifying information and any documented fit confirmation available.
  • Describe its condition and whether it holds the required pressure.
  • Mention a wheel lock and whether its key is present.
  • Report seized or damaged lug nuts, a damaged wheel, or any previous attempt to remove it.

Rick’s offers seized lug-nut removal, but damaged hardware and the condition of the wheel still need assessment. A borrowed spare does not resolve damaged studs or suspension.

If compatibility cannot be confirmed, discuss a tow

Rick’s installs a suitable spare you have available; this service is not a promise to bring a replacement tire. If there is no usable, confirmed-compatible spare, discuss light-duty wheel-lift towing, with dollies when appropriate, to a tire shop that can receive the vehicle.

Give the vehicle details, drivetrain and damage description before dispatch. Damaged-suspension towing requires an equipment and access check. Rick’s does not provide flatbed towing; suitability must be confirmed for the particular vehicle.

Make the pickup location clear

For help in Lake View East, Lincoln Park or elsewhere on Chicago’s North Side, give the street address and nearest cross street. Say whether the car is curbside, in an alley or inside a parking garage. For garage access, confirm height, ramps, turns and room to load or work beside the vehicle.

Tell us where the spare is, whether someone is still bringing it, and whether you have access to the car. That lets the service plan account for the equipment actually available at the pickup.

After a suitable spare is installed

Follow your vehicle manual and spare’s instructions for pressure, speed, load and any distance limits. Compact spares are temporary; arrange repair or replacement of the original tire promptly. Do not apply another vehicle’s limits to your own.

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance is open 24/7. Call with your location and vehicle details to confirm suitability, availability, an arrival estimate and the total quote before dispatch.
