Battery Still Under Warranty? Before You Replace It

Car won’t start and the battery may be under warranty? Check the claim process before authorizing a replacement.

A warranty claim and a roadside call are separate

Before buying another battery, find the receipt or installation record and contact the seller or warranty provider. Ask who can evaluate the battery, what records to bring and whether the original battery must be returned. A warranty label alone does not confirm that your particular failure or roadside costs are covered.

If you need help at the car now, tell Rick’s that you are also checking a possible warranty claim. Do not assume a separately booked jump start, tow or mobile replacement will be reimbursed. Ask the provider about those costs before authorizing them.

Ask about testing and the original battery

As one manufacturer example, Interstate Batteries’ warranty FAQ directs customers to an authorized warranty dealer or All Battery Center with a suitable replacement in stock. It says the original battery must be presented and tested, and that it must be fully charged for testing. Replacement depends on the limited-warranty terms.

Your battery’s brand, seller and purchase date may involve a different process. Confirm the applicable instructions directly. This example does not establish that Rick’s handles Interstate warranty claims.

If you choose a paid replacement while a claim is unresolved, discuss the old battery before it is removed for recycling or a core return. Ask the warranty provider what it needs, and agree with the installer on the handoff. Do not assume a photograph substitutes for returning the battery.

Choose the service based on the car’s condition

Describe what happens when you try to start: silence, clicking, slow cranking or an engine that starts and then stops. Mention recent boosts and any warning lights. A no-start symptom alone does not establish that the battery is defective; Interstate also notes that starting symptoms can come from discharge or charging-system problems.

  • Jump-start assistance may be suitable after the vehicle, battery condition and approved connection points are assessed.
  • Mobile battery replacement requires compatible stock, installation access and confirmation of any vehicle-specific setup requirements.
  • Light-duty wheel-lift towing may be needed for workshop assessment. Vehicle fit and loading access must be confirmed, with dollies when appropriate.

Keep the quote and claim questions together

Ask what the roadside quote includes and which work you are authorizing. If buying a battery, ask about that replacement’s own warranty and retain the invoice. An old battery’s possible coverage and a new battery’s terms are separate questions.

You can start the call with: “My car won’t start, and I am checking the battery warranty. I need help deciding between starting assistance, replacement and transport.” Have the vehicle year, make, model and purchase record available.

Tell us where the vehicle can be reached

For Lake View East and covered Chicago’s North Side locations, give the exact address, nearest intersection and parking entrance. Mention a hood-access problem, gate or garage. Garage entry requires confirmation of height, ramps, turns and working room.

Rick’s is open 24/7. Call to confirm the suitable service, availability, arrival estimate and quote while you check the warranty provider’s requirements.
