Brake Lights Not Working? Arrange Help Before Driving

If your brake lights are not working, pause the trip. Tell Rick’s what you observed before arranging roadside help.

Rear brake lamps and a dashboard warning are different

This guide concerns the lamps at the rear of the car that signal braking. A brake-system warning on the dashboard is a separate symptom, so describe which one you mean when calling. Report both if both are present.

Before an early commute or evening trip, take a report of failed brake lamps seriously. Ford’s owner-manual guidance says not to drive until brake-lamp operation has been verified. Do not assume that an engine that starts normally means the car is ready for the road.

Describe the observation, not a guessed repair

Tell us whether someone noticed one failed lamp, all brake lamps failing to illuminate, or lights staying on continuously. Mention the high-mounted center lamp if you already know whether it works. Say when the problem was first noticed and whether any recent work was done.

You do not need to stand behind the vehicle in traffic to investigate. Share what you can establish from a safe parked location. If you are uncertain which lights were observed, say that rather than calling it a confirmed bulb failure.

These details help explain the request, but they do not identify the failed part. Rick’s does not advertise brake-lamp wiring, switch or lighting-system repairs as a routine roadside service.

Mention a shifter or starting problem too

The cited Ford manual discusses brake-lamp operation alongside the brake-shift interlock. It notes that a fault may be involved when the selector will not leave Park despite the normal procedure. That does not establish the cause on your vehicle.

If the car also will not start or shift, report that separately. Do not bypass an interlock just to continue the trip. Follow your exact vehicle’s instructions and have the fault assessed. If your main problem is a red dashboard warning or changed braking performance, use our brake-warning guide to describe those additional symptoms.

When to discuss a tow to a repair shop

If the lighting problem cannot be resolved where the car is parked, discuss compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing to a receiving repair facility. Rick’s uses dollies when appropriate for compatible AWD/4WD vehicles; manufacturer requirements and vehicle condition determine the setup.

Have the year, make, model, drivetrain, key availability and destination ready. Tell us whether the wheels roll, steering works and parking brake releases. Damaged suspension requires a vehicle-specific equipment and access check. A tow request does not include electrical repair, and Rick’s does not offer flatbed towing.

Confirm the shop’s receiving hours and key handoff before booking, especially before its service desk opens.

Arrange the pickup from your actual parking space

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance is open 24/7, with Lake View East primary and Chicago’s North Side the broader focus. Give the exact address, nearest cross street and side of the street, including the entrance for an alley or rear lot.

For a garage, report the level, height, ramps, turns and loading room. Call to confirm vehicle suitability, availability and the full quote before dispatch.
