Car Has a Wheel Missing? What to Tell the Tow Operator

A missing wheel changes the pickup plan. Tell Rick’s which wheel is gone and how the vehicle is resting before arranging help.

Describe a missing wheel, not just a flat tire

A flat tire usually leaves the wheel attached. If the entire wheel is gone, say that first. Whether it was removed during an unfinished repair or you found it missing after parking, the operator needs to assess how the vehicle can be supported and loaded.

Do not try to drive or drag the car into a better pickup position. If a wheel came off while driving, report that event and any visible damage rather than requesting a routine tire change. Injuries or immediate traffic danger require emergency assistance first.

Leave unstable supports alone

Do not crawl underneath to inspect the hub or move blocks, a jack or other supports. Ford’s official tire-changing guidance warns against getting beneath a vehicle supported by a jack and limits the emergency jack to its intended tire-changing use. Follow your own vehicle’s manual; a car already resting on a brake component or improvised support needs professional assessment.

Describe what you can see from a safe standing position. Photos may help explain the situation, but do not enter traffic, reach underneath or disturb the vehicle to take them.

Could a usable spare solve the problem?

Possibly, if only one wheel is missing and the vehicle can safely accept its compatible spare. Tell Rick’s whether the spare is available and whether the correct wheel fasteners are present. Missing nuts or bolts, damaged studs, a damaged hub or suspension problems can prevent a straightforward installation.

Rick’s spare-tire installation service requires suitable equipment, a usable spare and safe working space. It does not promise replacement-wheel supply or repairs to hubs, brakes or suspension. A spare in the trunk alone does not establish that the car can be driven.

Why towing must be checked before dispatch

Rick’s provides compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing, with dollies when appropriate. A missing wheel changes the support and loading requirements; dollies do not automatically make every such pickup possible.

Give the year, make, model, drivetrain and exactly which wheels are missing. Report visible suspension damage and how the car is resting. Rick’s must confirm a vehicle-specific equipment and access plan before accepting the job. Some conditions require another provider or transport method.

Pickup details for a North Side parking space

For Lake View East service or another Chicago North Side pickup, give the street address and the entrance that actually reaches the car. A rear parking pad may be accessed from a different street than the building’s front door.

  • Identify the missing wheel by front/rear and driver/passenger side.
  • Explain whether keys and authorization are available, without testing movement.
  • Report the surface, slope, nearby parked cars and room around the affected corner.
  • For a garage, confirm height, ramps, turns, gates and loading room.
  • Have the receiving repair shop’s address and acceptance instructions ready.

Call Rick’s 24/7 to discuss the condition, service suitability, availability and total quote. Explain the missing wheel before booking so the pickup plan reflects the actual vehicle.
