DEF Warning on a Diesel: Fuel Delivery or Tow?

Diesel exhaust-fluid warning on your dashboard? Call Rick’s with the exact message before booking fuel delivery.

Read the message before choosing a service

“Exhaust fluid low,” a system fault and an empty diesel fuel tank are different problems. Read the whole dashboard message to us, including any distance countdown or operating restriction. A photo taken while safely parked can help you preserve the exact wording.

Diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF, belongs in its own system. It is not a substitute for diesel fuel. Ford’s DEF guidance describes speed restrictions and an eventual idle-only condition for the vehicles covered when fluid is depleted or contaminated. Your model’s warning and recovery requirements may differ; use its own manual.

A warning does not always mean “add more”

Ford’s selective catalytic reduction guidance distinguishes a low-fluid warning from a system malfunction. It also notes that a refill may take a short time to register. A warning that remains after a refill needs the correct assessment, not a promise that another bottle will fix it.

Tell us what product was added, approximately how much, which filler was used and whether the engine ran afterward. Do not put DEF in the fuel tank or dilute it. Ford says not to switch the ignition on if DEF entered the diesel fuel tank; if incorrect fluid entered the DEF tank, do not attempt to start the engine. Arrange professional inspection.

What Rick’s can assess

Rick’s fuel-delivery service offers regular or premium gasoline. Do not book that service expecting DEF delivery, diesel delivery or emissions-system repair. Explain the warning first so the request is not mistaken for a simple gasoline run-out.

If the vehicle needs transport, call about compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing, with dollies when appropriate. We check the model, drivetrain, loaded weight, condition and manufacturer transport requirements. A diesel engine does not tell us whether the vehicle fits our equipment. Rick’s does not offer medium-duty, heavy-duty or flatbed towing.

Details to have ready for a North Side pickup

  • Year, make, model, drivetrain and exact dashboard message.
  • Whether the vehicle starts, rolls and steers; any speed or restart restriction already displayed.
  • Any fluid added, recent repair and the repair-shop destination.
  • Pickup address, nearest cross street, keys and permission to move the vehicle.
  • For a garage: lowest height, ramps, turns, gates and loading room.

In Lake View East, identify the actual alley or parking entrance instead of only the apartment’s front address. The same applies to a Lincoln Park rear lot. Report access restrictions before dispatch; do not assume a truck can reach every space.

Call with the warning in front of you

Rick’s is open 24/7, with Lake View East as the primary service area and Chicago’s North Side the broader focus. Call to discuss equipment fit, access, availability, an arrival estimate and the total quote. If there is immediate traffic danger, fire or injury, call 911 first.
