A stuck fuel door can stop a gasoline delivery. Tell us about it before we head to your vehicle.
If your car is out of gas and the outer fuel door will not open, mention both problems when you call. We provide regular or premium gasoline delivery, but bringing fuel does not fix a failed door latch, release cable or fuel-system fault.
For fall and winter preparation, find the fuel-door instructions in your owner’s manual before you need them. The correct release can differ between vehicles—even within the same brand. Do not assume the door needs more force.
With the vehicle safely parked and switched off, consult the instructions for your exact year and model. Some fuel doors unlock with the driver’s door; others use an interior lever or a dedicated button. For example, the 2025 Hyundai Palisade manual says to unlock the driver’s door before pressing the fuel door at the specified edge.
Tell us whether the cabin unlocks normally, whether you hear the release operate, and whether the fuel door moves at all. If the vehicle also has no electrical power, report that separately. A fuel-door problem by itself is not enough to diagnose a dead battery or justify a jump start.
Some vehicles have an additional fuel-tank release sequence. The 2026 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid manual instructs the driver to press the fuel-door button and wait for tank depressurization and the “Fuel door unlocked” message before opening it.
Follow your own manual and dashboard instructions. Do not pull against a locked door while the vehicle is still completing its release sequence. That Hyundai manual also says not to refuel while the high-voltage hybrid battery is charging.
Ice can be a different problem from a failed latch. Hyundai’s Palisade instructions specifically warn against prying the door open. They describe an approved deicer—not radiator antifreeze—or allowing ice to melt in a warm location. Use only the method permitted for your vehicle; do not force a screwdriver or other tool behind the painted door.
If the normal procedure does not work, stop and describe what happened. Do not dismantle interior trim or try an emergency release based on instructions for a different vehicle.
Call Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance, available 24/7, with your vehicle’s year, make and model, the required fuel grade, and whether the filler is accessible. Tell us if the vehicle is a hybrid, if the doors unlock, and if a warning message appears.
For a pickup in Lake View East or elsewhere on Chicago’s North Side, give the exact address, nearest cross street and actual entrance. For a garage, include the level, clearance, ramps, turns and room around the vehicle.
If fuel cannot be added, we can discuss whether compatible light-duty wheel-lift towing is an option. Vehicle requirements, dollies where appropriate, and access must be checked first. Fuel delivery does not include fuel-door repair, and a tow is not confirmed until the vehicle and location fit the equipment.
