A key that won’t turn with locked steering is not the same as keys locked inside. Describe both symptoms before booking help.
You have the key, you can enter the car, but the ignition will not turn and the steering wheel will barely move. Tell us that exact sequence. “I’m locked out” suggests a different service, while “dead battery” assumes a cause that has not been established.
This guide concerns a parked vehicle before a trip. If steering becomes difficult while driving, treat that as a different safety problem; reach a safe stopping place and seek assistance. Immediate traffic danger requires emergency services first.
A steering lock can be part of the vehicle’s normal security system. For example, the 2025 Toyota Corolla manual for vehicles without smart key describes a key that seems stuck in OFF when the steering lock has not released. It specifies slight steering-wheel movement while turning the key.
That is a model-specific instruction, not permission to force a key or steering wheel. Read your own manual before trying a release procedure. Stop if it does not work normally, the key is damaged or a fault message appears. Do not dismantle or bypass the lock.
Push-button systems have different instructions. Ford’s steering-lock guidance distinguishes normal unlocking from a steering-lock fault that needs service, and warns to confirm steering is unlocked before moving the vehicle.
Rick’s authorized vehicle lockout service is for gaining entry; it does not include ignition-cylinder repairs, key cutting or programming. If you already have access but the ignition or steering lock remains stuck, contact a qualified automotive locksmith, repair shop or dealer about diagnosis and repair.
A jump start is not a promised fix for a key that will not turn. Report any dim lights, clicking or dashboard messages separately so the appropriate next step can be discussed. If repair requires taking the car to a facility, confirm that the facility can accept it before arranging transport.
Tell Rick’s before dispatch if the car cannot steer, remains in Park or has a parking brake that will not release. Our guide to vehicles that will not roll or steer explains why those details matter.
Light-duty wheel-lift towing, with dollies when appropriate, depends on manufacturer requirements, drivetrain, vehicle condition and working room. Having the keys does not by itself confirm that loading is possible. Damaged suspension requires a vehicle-specific equipment and access check.
In Lake View East, Lincoln Park and across Chicago’s North Side, specify the street or alley entrance that reaches the car. For garages, confirm height, ramps, turns and loading room.
