Keys Locked in the Trunk? What to Check Before Booking

Keys shut inside the trunk? Tell Rick’s their exact location before booking; opening a door may not provide trunk access.

Say “trunk,” not just “inside the car”

If your keys are in a bag under a closed trunk lid, the service request is different from keys visible on the driver’s seat. Tell Rick’s whether you have a sedan with a separate trunk, a hatchback or an SUV cargo area, and whether the cabin doors are also locked.

Rick’s provides authorized vehicle lockout assistance. The year, make, model, key location and lock condition determine whether the available approach can help. A cabin unlock should not be booked on the assumption that every trunk can then be opened.

If a person or pet is trapped and in danger, call 911 immediately. Routine lockout service must not delay emergency help.

An interior release may not respond

Security settings can affect the trunk release. For example, Ford’s published locking instructions describe a system that disables the interior luggage-compartment release after electronic locking. That model requires an approved unlocking or ignition action to restore the switch.

This is a vehicle-specific example, not a universal procedure. Check the manual for your exact car. Tell Rick’s if the cabin is already open but the release does nothing; repeating a door-unlock service may not solve that problem.

Mention a discharged vehicle battery

Electric releases can also depend on vehicle power. In Kia’s emergency door-lock guidance, the described vehicle’s closed trunk cannot be opened when electrical lock power has failed until power is restored. Other models have different backup arrangements.

Report whether the dashboard and door locks respond, and whether the car recently needed a boost. Rick’s can assess appropriate battery assistance, but a jump start is not a guaranteed trunk-opening method. Do not attach power to unidentified terminals or force a release based on instructions for another model.

Use an available spare key before improvising

If an authorized person can bring your spare key, that may be the most direct solution. An already configured manufacturer-approved remote-unlock feature may also be worth checking against your manual, although door unlocking and trunk release are not necessarily the same function.

Do not pry the trunk lid, force seatbacks or pull trim apart to reach the keys. Report a damaged latch or a trunk that was already sticking. Rick’s does not cut or program replacement keys; lost keys or a security-system problem may require an automotive locksmith or dealer instead.

Details to have ready for the call

  • Vehicle year, make, model and body style.
  • Where the keys are and whether a spare is available.
  • Whether cabin doors are open, the engine is running or occupants are inside.
  • Any known battery, latch or lock problem.
  • Identification and proof of ownership or authorization; mention if those documents are also locked inside.

For Lake View East and Chicago’s North Side, give the street address and actual parking entrance. For a garage, include the level, gate access, clearance and working room. A building’s front door may not lead to the rear parking space.

Rick’s is open 24/7. Confirm whether trunk access is feasible, what service is being quoted, current availability and the total price before dispatch.
