Miles to Empty: Can You Trust the Fuel Range Display?

Car stopped near empty? Call Rick’s with your location and fuel type. The range display cannot confirm why the engine stopped.

The number is an estimate, not a fuel reserve

A dashboard showing a few miles remaining does not guarantee that you can complete that distance. Ford’s explanation of distance to empty describes an approximate range that can decrease, increase or remain unchanged as driving patterns change. Check your own vehicle’s manual for how its display works.

For a Sunday drive from Lake View East across Chicago’s North Side, treat the low-fuel warning as a reason to refuel promptly—not a target to run down to zero. Do not add an assumed “hidden reserve” to the displayed number or use another driver’s experience as a mileage allowance for your car.

A stall with miles remaining is not a diagnosis

If the engine stops even though the display showed remaining range, tell dispatch both facts. A range estimate does not prove fuel is available at the engine, and a stall does not prove an empty tank. Adding gasoline will not correct every fuel-system, electrical or mechanical fault.

Describe what happened before the stop: the fuel gauge reading, low-fuel warning, recent refueling, sputtering or sudden shutdown. Report what you already observed when trying to start—normal cranking, slow cranking, clicking or silence. Do not keep attempting starts merely to gather more information.

If the vehicle is in an unsafe traffic position or there is immediate danger, call emergency services first. For practical steps after safely stopping, use our out-of-fuel driver guide.

What to confirm before requesting fuel delivery

Rick’s provides regular or premium fuel delivery subject to the vehicle’s needs and the pickup location. Confirm the required fuel and octane from the owner’s manual or fuel-door label. Tell us if you are unsure rather than guessing.

  • Vehicle: year, make and model, plus the required fuel type.
  • Location: exact address or nearest cross streets, travel direction and vehicle position.
  • Access: whether the car is curbside, in an alley, behind a gate or in a garage.
  • Service details: fuel quantity, current availability, arrival estimate and total price before dispatch.

A landmark alone may not identify a usable entrance. For Lake View East assistance, include the street side and nearest intersection. The same details help locate a car in Lincoln Park or elsewhere on the North Side.

What if fuel is added and the car still will not start?

Follow the restart instructions for your specific vehicle. Do not assume that every vehicle needs the same amount of fuel or the same starting sequence. Avoid repeated prolonged cranking. Report an unsuccessful restart so the next step can be assessed rather than simply requesting more fuel.

If there is a fuel smell, visible leakage or a concern that the wrong fuel was added, explain that before refueling or attempting another start. A compatible tow may be more appropriate than fuel delivery.

Rick’s offers light-duty wheel-lift towing with dollies when appropriate, with vehicle and access suitability confirmed first. We do not provide flatbed towing. Garage access requires checking height, ramps, turns and loading room.

Call with the symptoms, not just the range number

We review the location, fuel requirement and symptoms, explain the suitable service and confirm pricing before dispatch. Keep the displayed range as one detail in that conversation, not the only reason to choose fuel delivery.

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance takes calls 24/7 for Lake View East and Chicago’s North Side. Call now to discuss your stopped vehicle, or explore our driver guides for further preparation.

If the vehicle is safely stopped and fuel is needed, review emergency fuel delivery. Confirm the correct fuel type, location and delivery availability.
