Steering Suddenly Feels Heavy: Stop Safely and Arrange a Tow

If the steering wheel suddenly becomes much harder to turn or the dashboard shows a steering-system warning, reduce speed, get out of active traffic and stop as soon as you can do so safely. Do not keep driving just to test whether the problem clears. Check the instructions for your exact vehicle and arrange inspection or a compatible tow when the vehicle should not be driven.

For towing in Lake View East or Chicago’s North Side, call Rick’s at (312) 451-5785. Tell us what the steering feels like, the exact dashboard message and where the vehicle is parked so we can assess the next step.

Heavy steering and a power-steering warning require vehicle-specific guidance

Power steering can be hydraulic, electric or part of a system that uses both electrical and mechanical components. A warning can appear for different reasons, and the amount of steering assistance that remains varies by vehicle. The warning message, the steering effort and the owner’s manual all matter.

Ford’s owner-manual information includes a “Steering Loss—Stop Safely” message for a power-steering system that is not working. Hyundai’s 2026 owner guidance explains that a motor-driven power-steering warning can be accompanied by increased steering effort and calls for prompt inspection. These are examples; follow the manual and dashboard instructions for your year, make and model.

If you cannot steer well enough to leave danger safely, there has been a collision, you see smoke or fire, or anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 first.

What to do after reaching a safe stopping place

  • Turn on the hazard lights and keep occupants away from moving traffic when it is safe.
  • Read the complete dashboard message. Photograph it from inside the vehicle if you can do that safely.
  • Note when the problem started. Tell us whether it happened during a turn, after startup, after hitting a pothole or after another warning appeared.
  • Do not repeatedly circle the block to see whether steering assistance returns.
  • Look from a safe position for an obviously low or damaged tire, a wheel sitting at an unusual angle or fluid beneath the vehicle. Do not crawl under it.
  • Follow the owner’s manual. Do not add fluid or disconnect the battery as a guess.

If the vehicle pulls sharply, a wheel is damaged, the steering does not respond normally or the dashboard tells you to stop, leave it parked and arrange the appropriate transport.

Could a low battery cause heavy steering?

Some electric power-steering systems may require more effort when vehicle voltage is low. That does not mean every steering warning is solved with a jump start. Ask what the dashboard displays and describe whether the engine starts normally, clicks, cranks slowly or does not crank.

Rick’s provides jump-start service and mobile battery replacement, but those services are appropriate only when the starting and battery symptoms fit. A vehicle that starts but continues to show a steering warning or remains difficult to control needs vehicle-specific evaluation. Do not use a temporary restart as proof that it is safe to drive.

What Rick’s checks before a wheel-lift tow

Rick’s provides compatible wheel-lift towing; we do not offer flatbed towing and we do not repair steering systems. Before dispatch, we need to confirm the vehicle, drivetrain, key availability, wheel position, steering response, suspension condition and pickup access fit the equipment.

A steering or suspension problem can leave the front wheels turned, locked or unable to track normally. Rick’s can tow some vehicles with damaged suspension, but the condition and equipment fit must be assessed first. Some vehicles or failures require a flatbed or another transport method. If the manufacturer’s transport instructions require equipment we do not carry, we will not describe wheel-lift towing as compatible.

What to tell Rick’s when you call

  • Vehicle: year, make, model, drivetrain and whether it is electric, hybrid or gasoline-powered.
  • Warning: exact wording, symbol and color on the dashboard.
  • Steering: whether it is heavy in both directions, stuck in one position, noisy, jerky or completely unresponsive.
  • Starting condition: whether the engine starts and whether other electrical warnings appeared.
  • Wheel and suspension condition: whether any tire is flat, wheel is turned sharply or corner of the vehicle sits low.
  • Pickup point: exact address, nearest cross street, side of the street and direction the vehicle faces.
  • Access: street, alley, driveway, lot or garage, including gate, level and posted clearance.
  • Destination: repair-shop name, address and after-hours drop-off instructions.

A useful opening is: “My steering suddenly became heavy, the dashboard says ___, the vehicle is at ___, and the wheels currently ___.” Report what you observe without trying to diagnose the failure.

Lake View East access details can change the towing plan

In Lake View East, give the actual street or parking entrance and the nearest cross streets. Around Broadway, Belmont Avenue, Clark Street, Sheridan Road and DuSable Lake Shore Drive, the correct entrance and direction of travel can matter more than a business name.

If the vehicle is in a garage or tight alley, share the lowest posted clearance along the entire route, garage level, ramp turns, gate access and whether another vehicle blocks the approach. Review the garage and tight-space towing guide before calling when access is restricted.
