A leaking or broken tire valve can leave you stranded without a visible nail. Here’s how to choose the next step.
The valve is where air enters the tire, but it can also be a source of pressure loss. Michelin’s flat-tire guidance lists leaking valves and wheel-related leaks among the possible causes. A tire shop needs to identify the actual fault; a hiss near the valve is useful information, not a complete diagnosis.
Tell Rick’s whether the stem appears broken, air escapes after the inflator is removed, or the tire keeps losing pressure. You do not need to take anything apart to request help.
If a flat develops while driving, slow gradually and reach a safe place off the road. Michelin warns that continuing to drive on a flat can damage the wheel and tire, even over a short distance. Don’t make a trip to the tire shop on a flat simply because it is nearby.
If you are already parked with a flat, discuss a spare change or tow before moving the car. Avoid repeated inflation attempts on a damaged tire; Michelin advises professional assessment before reinflating one. For immediate danger from traffic, call 911 first.
Rick’s roadside tire service installs a usable, compatible spare when the vehicle and working space allow it. This replaces the affected wheel assembly temporarily; it does not repair the leaking valve on the removed wheel.
Before calling, tell us whether you have a spare, where it is stored and whether a wheel-lock key is available. If you do not know the spare’s condition, say so. NHTSA recommends checking spare-tire pressure along with the other tires and consulting a tire professional about tires that do not maintain pressure. Follow your vehicle’s instructions and the spare’s speed and distance limits.
A valve repair, TPMS sensor repair or replacement tire is a tire-shop matter. Don’t book a roadside spare installation expecting those repairs to be included.
With no suitable spare, ask about light-duty wheel-lift towing to a tire shop. Rick’s checks vehicle compatibility, drivetrain, wheel condition and access, with dollies when appropriate. A damaged wheel or suspension needs a vehicle-specific equipment and access assessment.
Confirm the receiving shop is open or has approved after-hours drop-off before choosing the destination. Explain that the suspected problem is at the valve and whether the tire was driven while flat, so the shop can plan its inspection.
