Paid for Your Own Tow? Keep These Reimbursement Records

Booked a tow yourself? Keep the service records and check your benefit provider’s rules before assuming the bill will be reimbursed.

Direct booking and reimbursement are separate

You can arrange paid service directly with Rick’s, but that call does not confirm insurance, membership or manufacturer-benefit coverage. Your benefit provider decides eligibility under its terms. Don’t assume Rick’s can bill that provider directly or that a receipt guarantees repayment.

If you have not booked yet and intend to use a benefit, contact the provider first. Ask whether you must use its dispatch process, whether an independently arranged tow is eligible and whether prior authorization is required. If service already happened, ask how to submit the actual expense without changing the facts.

Keep one complete record of the service

Ask for a receipt or invoice and retain proof of payment. Check the details while they are easy to confirm. A useful record set includes:

  • Service date, provider name and contact information.
  • The serviced vehicle’s year, make and model.
  • Pickup and destination addresses for towing.
  • The work performed and an itemized charge description.
  • The total paid and payment confirmation.
  • Any benefit-provider authorization or reference number.

These are practical records to keep, not a universal insurer checklist. Your provider may request different information. For example, Progressive Commercial’s claims guidance asks customers who arranged their own roadside service for a receipt or invoice and identifying policy and vehicle information; reimbursement remains subject to coverage verification and limits.

Ask about the destination and extra charges

Before choosing a distant shop, ask your benefit provider how its towing limit applies. State Farm’s emergency road service description, for example, identifies limitations on costs beyond towing to the nearest repair facility and on certain additional labor. That is an example of why a preferred destination and a covered destination may differ—not a description of your own policy.

Ask specifically about mileage, recovery work, access-related handling and any other separately quoted work. Confirm what you owe Rick’s independently of what the benefit provider may later repay.

Make the service description accurate

A usable-spare installation, battery jump and tow are different jobs. Record what actually happened, including whether recovery was needed before transport. If an invoice has an error, request a factual correction; don’t relabel a service to fit a benefit.

Keep the original documents and submit copies through the provider’s verified website, app or instructed channel. Confirm its deadline and save the submission reference. Send policy or claim details to the benefit provider rather than posting them publicly.

Arranging direct help on Chicago’s North Side

For Lake View East, Lincoln Park and other North Side pickups, tell Rick’s the exact address, entrance, vehicle details and destination. Light-duty wheel-lift towing, with dollies when appropriate, requires a compatibility and access check. Garage entry depends on height, ramps, turns and loading room; damaged suspension needs a vehicle-specific assessment.

If the car may not need transport, discuss the appropriate roadside service first. Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance is open 24/7. Call (312) 451-5785 to confirm service, availability and the quote. More practical questions are covered in our driver guides.
