Need a Tow With a Bike Rack or Roof Box?

Need a tow with a bike rack or roof box attached? Call Rick’s with your vehicle, accessories and pickup location.

Mention accessories before the truck is dispatched

A disabled car with bicycles on the rear or a box on its roof needs more pickup information than the vehicle model alone. Describe whether the rack is mounted on the hitch, trunk or roof, whether it is loaded, and whether you have the keys or tools needed to remove it. Tell us if anything was damaged during the breakdown.

Do not assume an accessory must stay on—or must come off. Rick’s needs to assess the vehicle and loading arrangement first. Our towing service covers compatible light-duty vehicles using wheel-lift equipment and dollies when appropriate. Accessory clearance is one part of that assessment.

Garage height includes what is on the roof

For a garage pickup, give the posted clearance and describe the roof box, bicycles or other equipment above the vehicle. Also report the ramps, tight turns, gate and space around the parking stall. The fact that the car drove into the garage does not confirm that a towing arrangement can get it out.

In Lake View East, an apartment address may lead to a different entrance than the garage or rear alley. Provide the actual vehicle entrance and the nearest cross street. If you can safely send a photo, show the parking position and accessory without stepping into traffic or climbing onto the vehicle.

Plan for removal without creating another problem

If removal is needed, confirm who will handle it and where the bicycles, box or cargo will go. Do not assume the tow truck has storage space for them or that rack removal is included in the towing quote. Missing rack keys, security bolts or a jammed mount should be mentioned before dispatch.

Keep people clear of the loading area and follow the operator’s instructions. Do not start dismantling a rack beside moving traffic. If there is an immediate danger, call 911 first. A safe location and a plan for the equipment matter more than saving a few minutes at pickup.

Loaded weight and secure cargo still matter

Report substantial luggage, tools or other cargo inside the vehicle as well as the external rack. Give a known weight if available; identify an estimate as an estimate. A car’s empty specification does not describe its loaded condition.

Ford’s roof-rack guidance emphasizes securing the load and checking the vehicle-specific limits; it also notes that a loaded vehicle can handle differently. Use your own vehicle manual and rack instructions rather than borrowing a weight limit from another model. Those limits do not, by themselves, establish towing compatibility.

Confirm the destination and the complete pickup plan

Ask the receiving repair shop whether it can accept the car with the accessories attached. If its lot or entrance has height restrictions, pass those details along. Arrange separate transport for any items that cannot travel with the vehicle, and take essential personal belongings when it is safe to do so.

Call Rick’s 24/7 with your year, make, model, drivetrain, key availability, destination and accessory details. We’ll confirm equipment fit, access, availability, an arrival estimate and upfront phone pricing before dispatch. Browse our driver guides for other breakdown questions.

For a pickup with a bike rack, roof box or other accessory, review Rick’s wheel-lift towing. Report loaded height, weight, rack mounting and access before the equipment assessment and quote.
