Two Batteries: Does Your Vehicle Need a 24V Jump Start?

Seeing two batteries does not tell you which jump-start voltage to use. Confirm the vehicle’s requirements before connecting equipment.

Battery count is not a voltage specification

A diesel van or pickup may have more than one battery without requiring a 24V boost. For a concrete example, Ford’s 2009 diesel supplement describes two frame-mounted batteries on the E-Series covered by its jump-start procedure, yet specifies a 12-volt starting supply.

That example does not establish the voltage of your vehicle. It shows why “there are two batteries” is not enough information to select equipment. The exact model, engine and manufacturer’s instructions matter.

Don’t choose a higher voltage for extra power

Ford’s diesel jump-start guidance requires matching nominal battery voltage. A 24V setting is not an upgrade to try because a 12V attempt failed.

If the voltage or approved connection points are unclear, stop before connecting equipment and ask for assistance. Do not disconnect, rearrange or bridge batteries to create a different setup. Use your vehicle’s own manual, including any instructions for installed auxiliary equipment.

Rick’s provides suitable 12V and 24V jump-start assistance. We confirm the vehicle requirements and access before deciding on the setup. A jump start does not repair a starter, alternator or engine fault.

Tell us what happens when you try to start

Describe silence, clicking, slow cranking or normal cranking without the engine starting. Mention whether it stopped while driving, needed a recent boost or has a warning message. Those details help choose the service; they are not a diagnosis on their own.

For a work vehicle, have these details ready:

  • Year, make, model and engine type.
  • Any confirmed voltage information from the manual or vehicle documentation.
  • Whether it has an auxiliary battery system or aftermarket electrical equipment.
  • Battery or approved jump-point location, if known.
  • An authorized contact for service and payment.

If you don’t know the voltage, say so. There is no need to guess or remove covers just to make the call.

Access matters as much as the vehicle description

For a Lake View East pickup, give the exact address and the street or alley entrance that reaches the vehicle. The same applies in Lincoln Park and across Chicago’s North Side. Explain whether the hood opens and whether a wall, cargo or another parked vehicle blocks access.

Garage entry requires confirmation of height, ramps, turns and loading room. Tell us about battery access below a seat or along a frame without assuming the equipment must connect directly there; the approved jump points control the procedure.

Confirm the next step before dispatch

Call Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance at (312) 451-5785, open 24/7, to confirm suitability, availability and a quote. If starting assistance is not appropriate, discuss the next service needed rather than repeated boosts.

Accepting a jump-start request does not establish that the same vehicle is eligible for towing. Any transport requires a separate light-duty vehicle and access assessment. For other breakdown questions, visit our driver guides.
