Ran Out of Fuel: What to Do Safely
A vehicle that sputters and stops near empty may need fuel, but a no-start can have other causes. Get the car out of traffic and avoid repeated long starting attempts.
Safely stopped? Start here
- If the vehicle is in an unsafe traffic position, call emergency services.
- Confirm the fuel type from the fuel-door label or owner’s manual.
- Avoid repeated prolonged cranking; request fuel delivery and follow the manual after refueling.
What to do
- Stop in a safe place
Use hazards when appropriate and provide your exact cross streets, road direction and vehicle position. If you are in an unsafe traffic lane, call emergency services.
- Confirm the fuel type
Check the owner’s manual or fuel-door label for the correct gasoline or diesel requirement. Do not guess, especially with a diesel vehicle.
- Request fuel delivery
Call Rick’s with your location, vehicle model and fuel type. Confirm the amount, availability and price directly.
- Restart as the manual directs
After fuel is added, follow your vehicle’s instructions. Avoid repeated prolonged cranking, which can drain the battery and may mask a separate no-start issue. If it still will not start, seek diagnosis or a compatible tow.
Important limit
Running a tank very low repeatedly can overheat or wear a fuel pump in some vehicles. Do not assume that one failed restart proves pump damage.
How to reduce the chance of this happening
Refuel before the tank gets very low, especially before late-night or winter trips. A quarter tank is a practical planning buffer recommended by AAA.
