Saturday Breakdown: Can You Tow to a Closed Repair Shop?

Repair shop closed after a Saturday breakdown? Confirm drop-off permission, access and keys before booking a Chicago tow with Rick’s.

Call the receiving shop before you book the tow

Your car stopped working, you have a shop in mind, and nobody is answering. Before sending the vehicle there, find out whether the shop accepts an after-hours delivery. An empty parking space or a visible key box does not answer that question.

This comes up when planning a weekend tow from Lake View East or elsewhere on Chicago’s North Side. We can discuss wheel-lift towing, but the destination needs a workable handoff. Do not assume that a repair shop, dealership or parking operator has agreed to receive your car.

Check the shop’s own website, voicemail or written instructions for an after-hours process. If those instructions are unclear, keep the destination unconfirmed. This article does not claim any particular Chicago shop is open or accepting cars today.

Use these questions to confirm the drop-off

You can ask the shop: “My car cannot be driven. Do you accept a tow-in after closing, and where exactly should the driver leave it?” Then confirm:

  • Permission: Is your vehicle approved for this delivery, or is an appointment or authorization needed first?
  • Entrance: Which street, driveway or gate should the truck use?
  • Parking position: Which marked area is approved for the vehicle? Are any spaces reserved or prohibited?
  • Keys: Is there an approved key-drop procedure, and what information belongs with the keys?
  • Contact: Who should Rick’s contact if the gate is closed or the instructions do not match the site?
  • Next step: When should you contact the shop to confirm receipt and discuss diagnosis?

Get the full destination address, not just the shop name. If the business has several locations, confirm which one accepts your vehicle. Keep any written approval available for the handoff.

If you cannot confirm an approved destination

Tell Rick’s before dispatch. Say: “The shop is closed and I have not confirmed permission to leave the car.” That gives us the actual situation to discuss instead of discovering a destination problem after loading.

You may need to arrange another authorized destination with suitable access. Do not assume a tow includes overnight storage, that Rick’s has a storage yard, or that a second trip is included. Ask about the available options and the total quote for the plan you actually choose.

If you already arranged service and the destination changes, call immediately. A different route, entrance or delivery arrangement can require a revised agreement. The towing quote guide explains the information needed when comparing costs.

Describe both ends of the trip

The pickup and destination are separate access checks. For a car parked near Broadway and Belmont or around Diversey Parkway, give the exact address and side of the street. If it is in a building garage, provide the entrance, level, posted clearance and gate contact.

At the receiving shop, explain any narrow driveway, locked gate or specific drop-off position you were given. A shop’s street address alone may not identify its vehicle entrance. Our Lake View East service guide has more local pickup information.

Also provide the vehicle year, make, model, drivetrain if known, keys and wheel condition. Rick’s uses wheel-lift equipment and does not offer flatbed towing. Vehicle compatibility and physical access must be confirmed; destination approval does not establish that the vehicle fits our equipment.

Separate delivery from repair approval

A tow gets the vehicle to the agreed destination. It does not confirm that the shop has diagnosed the problem, approved a warranty claim or agreed to start work immediately.

Ask the repair facility how it wants your contact details and description of the problem. Confirm repair authorization directly with the shop. Keep the towing agreement and the shop’s repair arrangements clear so you know whom to call about each part.

Ready to discuss your Saturday tow?

Call Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance at (312) 451-5785. We are open 24/7. Tell us where the vehicle is, what happened, the vehicle details and whether the destination has approved delivery.

We’ll discuss suitability, access, availability, an arrival estimate and price. If the problem may be resolved at the vehicle, compare our roadside assistance services before assuming towing is the only option.
