An EV still connected to a charger needs a safe release plan before pickup. Tell Rick’s the cable is stuck when you call.
You return to a public charging space, end the session, and the connector stays attached. That does not automatically mean the car needs a tow. Start by separating the charging-equipment problem from the vehicle’s ability to drive. Do not try to drive or pull the vehicle away while the cable remains connected.
Use the support details displayed on the charging station or in its official app. Give the station number, connector or stall number, vehicle model and any error message. Explain whether the session appears active or stopped and whether an adapter is attached. The charging operator can assess its equipment; the vehicle manufacturer can advise on the car’s release procedure.
At an apartment or workplace charger, contact the property’s authorized charging contact. Rick’s cannot promise to reset, dismantle or repair someone else’s charging equipment. If there is smoke, fire, exposed damaged wiring or immediate danger, keep clear and call 911.
Follow your exact vehicle’s manual and the charging provider’s instructions. Do not assume an online demonstration for a different model applies to yours.
For example, Tesla’s Model X charge-cable release guidance requires charging to be stopped before its manual procedure. It warns against using that procedure with exposed high-voltage conductors, and directs uncertain owners to a service center. It also warns that pulling the release and removing the connector simultaneously can cause serious injury.
This is a reason to get model-specific help, not a universal set of release steps. Do not cut the cable, pry apart the connector or improvise a way to defeat its lock.
When discussing light-duty towing, say clearly that the vehicle is still connected. Have these details ready:
If the vehicle will not wake up, mention that separately. Our EV no-start guide explains why low-voltage assistance and restoring driving range are different services. A jump start is not a guaranteed fix for a stuck charge connector.
Even after the cable is safely released, transport must meet the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements. Rick’s uses light-duty wheel-lift equipment, with dollies when appropriate. Vehicle weight, drivetrain, wheel condition, transport instructions and loading access determine whether that setup is suitable.
Rick’s does not provide flatbed towing. If the vehicle needs equipment or specialized service Rick’s cannot provide, a suitably equipped provider is necessary. Confirm the receiving repair facility and its drop-off arrangements before agreeing on a destination.
For Lake View East, Lincoln Park or another covered North Side pickup, give the street address and actual vehicle entrance. A charger pin may lead to a building’s front door instead of its garage. Include the parking level, stall number, gate access, entrance height, ramps, turns and loading room.
Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance is open 24/7. Call to discuss suitability, current availability, an arrival estimate and the total quote. Report any change in the cable’s status before dispatch so the pickup plan matches the situation.
