EV Won’t Start: Low-Voltage Battery or Empty Range?

An EV that will not wake up and an EV with no driving range need different help. Call Rick’s with the model and warning messages.

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance · October 24, 2026 · English & Spanish

Describe the symptom instead of assuming a jump will fix it

An electric vehicle uses a high-voltage system for driving and a separate low-voltage supply for other vehicle functions. A low-voltage issue can prevent the car from waking up, but those symptoms are not a diagnosis. An empty driving battery needs charging; a low-voltage boost does not replenish its driving range.

When calling for jump-start assistance, give the exact year and model. Low-voltage systems differ. Do not assume that every EV accepts a conventional 12V jump procedure.

What manufacturer guidance tells us

Hyundai’s cited IONIQ 5 instructions describe a 12V jump-start system and specify a 12V power supply. Tesla’s Model 3 out-of-range guidance describes another situation: low-voltage support may be necessary before the depleted high-voltage battery can charge.

These examples show why a generic battery assumption is unreliable. Follow the instructions for your exact vehicle. Do not handle high-voltage cables or attempt to improvise connections. If the vehicle has smoke, heat, fire or crash-related battery damage, keep clear and contact emergency services.

If the vehicle ran out of driving range

Report the last displayed charge level, warnings and current location. Rick’s does not advertise mobile high-voltage EV charging. A vehicle stranded away from charging may need transport that complies with its manufacturer’s instructions.

Tesla advises contacting roadside assistance or a tow provider after safely pulling over when range is exhausted. Its guidance also stresses positioning at a reachable charger and confirming charging has begun. This is model-specific guidance, not a promise that Rick’s can transport every Tesla or other EV.

Transport must match the vehicle

Rick’s operates light-duty wheel-lift equipment, with dollies for compatible vehicles. The exact EV’s transport requirements, weight, drivetrain, wheel condition and loading access must be checked before accepting a tow. If the manufacturer requires a transport method Rick’s does not provide, arrange a properly equipped provider.

Tell us whether the vehicle can roll or steer, whether the parking brake releases, and whether you have the key card, fob or required access. Do not force a locked wheel or defeat a vehicle interlock to prepare for pickup.

Calling from an apartment garage or curbside space

For Lake View East and other North Side pickups, give cross streets and the actual vehicle entrance. A charger’s map pin may point to the wrong garage level or entrance. Report height, ramps, turns and available loading room.

Call Rick’s 24/7 to discuss towing compatibility or suitable low-voltage assistance. Confirm availability, arrival estimate and price directly. If charging is the destination, verify connector compatibility and access before agreeing on the drop-off.
