Rental Car Breakdown in Chicago: Before You Book a Tow

Rental car stranded? Contact the rental provider first, then call Rick’s if independent towing or roadside service is authorized.

Rick’s Emergency Roadside Assistance · October 24, 2026 · English & Spanish

Contact the rental provider before arranging independent service

Once safely stopped, use the roadside instructions in your rental agreement or the provider’s official app. For example, Enterprise directs customers with an undrivable mechanical breakdown to reach a safe location and contact its roadside team. Your own rental company may have different arrangements.

Ask whether it will send a provider or authorize you to book one. Rick’s can discuss a compatible pickup, but a direct call does not establish rental-company approval or guarantee reimbursement. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 first.

Get these answers before dispatch

  • Who is authorizing the work, and is there a reference number?
  • Which service is approved: towing, a jump start, an unlock or a spare installation?
  • What is the exact destination, and can it receive the vehicle now?
  • Who pays the operator, and what receipt details are required?
  • What are the key-handoff instructions?

Do not assume the closest rental branch is the approved drop-off. A closed location, airport return lane or repair shop may have different access requirements. Record the instructions before booking.

Tell Rick’s what happened and where the car is

Call with the rental vehicle’s year, make, model, drivetrain and symptoms. Explain whether it starts, rolls and steers, whether the keys are available, and whether there is collision or suspension damage. These details determine whether light-duty wheel-lift towing is appropriate or whether another authorized service may resolve the problem.

For a hotel or apartment garage in Lake View East, provide the actual vehicle entrance, posted clearance, level, ramps, turns and loading room. On the street, give cross streets and the side of the road. Garage entry requires confirmation.

Plan for people, luggage and the handoff

Tell the rental company how many travelers are with you and ask how replacement transportation will be handled. Confirm passenger arrangements separately from moving the car. When safe and coordinated with the operator, keep your phone, identification, rental agreement, medication and essential belongings with you.

Ask Rick’s about current availability, arrival estimate and price before dispatch. The service is independent; this guide does not imply a partnership with a rental brand. Rick’s offers English and Spanish phone assistance 24/7.

Review how to prepare for a tow or browse the driver guides hub for help describing the vehicle problem.

If the vehicle cannot be driven safely, review Rick’s wheel-lift towing. Give the pickup and destination, vehicle details, keys, drivetrain and roll/steer condition so equipment and access can be checked.
